Graduation Day

Simo and I ran into these new graduates in Brera the other day. We both liked their looks and asked them for a picture. While chatting with them, we learned that their outfits were actually costumes for their graduation presentation.  In Italy the graduation ceremony, "La Laurea," entails a final thesis presentation in front of a panel of professors. 

The subject of their thesis was based on a historical cultural event in Germany. I was really impressed with how they used contemporary dress to recreate fashions of the time. A move that underscores the timeless influence of historical iconic clothing on modern fashion. The men's coat, waistcoat and long hose are substituted by a trench, vest and leggings. The leather jacket and tassel are a fun take on harlequin dress. Good job kids, you fooled me.

Wonder what he's thinking. Maybe of a lover. I too am guilty of thinking with my eyes closed...while listening to music, on the treadmill (i know, very dangerous). Whatever it is, his cravat and pin are super charming.

Stimulating the senses II

Evgenia's look is an exemplary play on texture, weight, and light. The coated outer layer of her woven coat reflects light perfectly while creating a glossy sheen to contrast the matte inner layer. Layered over a transparent t-shirt (the black bra is a "chicca" as they say here in Italy to describe the gem in a situation), the coat creates a sense of weightiness. But not too heavy, as the real anchor is the chunky gold and black necklace whose interlocking spikes blend superbly with the weave of the coat.

Love the layering here...leather Martin Margiela jacket over motorcycle jacket, over vest, over t-shirt. Perfect-fit Superfine skinny jeans are an all-time favorite. A woman wearing Azzedine Alaia on her feet (or anywhere on her body for that matter) can do no wrong!!!! Bad girl smile, worth millions!
